WDL Spider Scheme

Official Rules & Regulations – World Dancing League (WDL)

International Open Competition

TOP 8 – Spider Scheme Battle Format

WDL Spider Scheme Diagram

1. Participation

The World Dancing League is an Open competition, available to all couples holding a valid WDSF license, from the following categories:

  • Youth
  • Adult
  • Senior
  • Professional

✔️ All couples compete together, regardless of category.

2. Elimination System – Until Round of 16

2.1. Round reductions

Each preliminary round qualifies approximately 50% of the previous round, following this structure:

  • If more than 64 couples are registered → the round is capped at 64
  • Standard progression: 64 → 32 → 16

2.2. Ties

Any tie situation is resolved according to the WDSF Competition Rules and the Competition Management Manual, using the official criteria for ranking, mark totals, and tie-breaking.

3. Dances per Round (Until the Final)

Each competitive round before the final stage consists of three dances.

3.1 Dance Selection by Draw

For every round, the three dances are selected by a random draw, conducted by the Chairperson.

3.2 Same Dances for All Couples

Until the Top 16 battles begin, all couples dance the same three dances in each round. From 16 forward each heat can have different 3 dances.

3.3 Dances for the Battle Stage

Once the battle rounds begin, the system changes:

  • Each battle round still includes three dances.
  • The dances are selected by draw for each battle group independently.

4. Special System – From Top 16 Onwards

Once the competition reaches the Top 16, a unique WDL format begins.

4.1. Ranking by marks

The 16 qualified couples receive a ranking based on their marks (higher marks → higher position). This ranking creates 4 initial groups (A, B, C, D):

  • Group A → Positions 1–4
  • Group B → Positions 5–8
  • Group C → Positions 9–12
  • Group D → Positions 13–16

4.2. Random selection across groups

From these four groups (A–D), one couple is randomly drawn from each to form four competitive mixed groups, each containing:

  • 1 couple from Group A
  • 1 couple from Group B
  • 1 couple from Group C
  • 1 couple from Group D

This guarantees balanced and fair groups.

5. Competition Within the 4 Mixed Groups

All couples inside each mixed group compete together.

5.1. Qualification

The best two couples from each group (according to judges' marks) qualify for the next stage.

➡️ This produces 8 qualified couples who move forward into the special Top-8 bracket.

6. Top 8 – Battle Format ("Spider Scheme")

The 8 finalists compete using the battle-style bracket, following the official diagram of the event.

6.1. Match-ups

Match-ups are determined as follows:

Semifinalist 1: 1st placed group A vs. 2nd placed group D

Semifinalist 2: 1st placed group D vs. 2nd placed group A

Semifinalist 3: 1st placed group B vs. 2nd placed group C

Semifinalist 4: 1st placed group C vs. 2nd placed group B

Next round:

Finalist 1: Semifinalist 1 vs. Semifinalist 3

Finalist 2: Semifinalist 2 vs. Semifinalist 4

6.2. Advancement

  • Winners advance to Finalist 1 and Finalist 2.
  • Losers of the semifinals dance the 3rd/4th place final.

6.3. Winner

The finalists compete head-to-head to determine the Champion of the World Dancing League.

7. Judging & Evaluation System

  • Judging is carried out by a panel selected by the organizers.
  • Evaluation follows WDSF standards to ensure fairness, consistency, and objectivity.
  • In preliminary rounds, the traditional marking system is used; in the battle rounds AJS.

8. General Rules

  • The event is governed by WDSF regulations and by the internal rules of the World Dancing League.
  • Any unforeseen situation will be resolved by the Chairperson.
  • The organizer reserves the right to adjust the running order, group composition, or round structure for technical or production reasons.

9. Entry Fee

Participation in the World Dancing League has a cost of:

💶 70€ per couple

The fee must be paid upon registration following the instructions provided by the organizer.

10. Prize Money
